The New Year is underway, and with it comes the prospect of fresh starts and new beginnings. Whilst the resolutions to get fit and spend less are quickly broken, finding a new job brings with it endless potential for career growth and positivity. January is the most popular month to search for a new job, and though this raises the stakes for competition, it also brings a host of newly created opportunities. So, here's 3 reasons why should you start your job hunt today:
The ability to start afresh applies not only to you, but also the company you would like to join. Everyone has had a restful break and returned to work feeling energised and optimistic. Companies are therefore ready to take a fresh outlook to recruitment and reassess their hiring needs. The slower paced hiring and relaxed attitudes of December make way for a renewed sense of urgency, as teams look to grow and expand, ready to take on the challenges of the year ahead. Our recent salary survey found that 50% of companies created new roles in 2016, and 42% increased the size of their team, so this is an excellent time to make a new beginning.
The last quarter of the year, particularly in December, sees the completion of many projects and campaigns, often leading to stretched budgets and a slowdown in the recruitment market. New budgets are allocated in January, meaning that companies know how much budget they can allocate to recruitment and funding is more likely to be approved. Businesses are also aware of whether or not they have reached their targets for the previous year, so can be more confident in how much they are looking to spend.
It’s no secret that January is one of the busiest months for recruitment; finding a new job is often the top priority in the year’s resolutions. We see a surge in both roles and applications, so whilst the level of competition between candidates may increase, new job openings arise and provide ample opportunities to find your next role. Companies also create new and varied roles, depending on the advancements and challenges faced in the previous year. We have seen an increase in the number of government relations roles, for example, after June’s Brexit results, and also a rise in digital and content roles following the influx and growth of new social media platforms. These types of roles call for diverse skillsets, meaning there’s something for everyone in the thriving January jobs market.
